Parent involvement in education is crucial. Regardless of family income or background, students whose parents are involved in their schooling are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school. In short, when you show up your kids succeed.
Here are two ways you can get involved at Herff Elementary and show your kids that school matters:
Inspire a love of reading!
At this age, kids get so excited about visiting the school library and picking out books they love. The great thing is that their joy is contagious! If you are looking for a feel-good volunteer opportunity consider helping in the school library. We guarantee you will leave smiling!
So what's involved?
We are looking for volunteers to help in the school library for one hour a week. You can volunteer during your child's library time. (Class schedule posted online with volunteer sign-up so you can check your child's library time). As the class comes in, you will help check in and shelve books and then help kids find new books and check out. That's it. Pretty simple, but it's a critical role because we anticipate nearly 1,000 books moving through the library each week.
We will do some basic training the next two weeks and shifts begin the first week of October. We need 40 volunteers each week, so please consider serving in this way!

Make a Child Feel Welcome!
Do you know how to give a hi-five? Then you have what it takes to become a Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students).
Watch D.O.G.S. is an innovative father-involvement, educational initiative of the National Center for Fathering. There are 2 primary goals for the Watch D.O.G.S. program:
- To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
- To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
Watch D.O.G.S volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling.
On September 25 at 6 pm, join us at our "Dads and Kids Pizza Night" to learn more about how you can be involved. Please RSVP to the meeting. Questions? Contact Mike Previtera
